Application

The Erdinger Arena in Oberstdorf is one of the most famous ski jumping venues in the world and home to the opening competition of the Four Hills Tournament. A special technical highlight is the inclined elevator, which is equipped with automatic level control. This innovative transport system is controlled by modern radio modules and was extensively refurbished in November 2011 to ensure the highest safety and efficiency standards.

Challenges

The previously installed radio modules were replaced by DATAEAGLE 3000 due to their very high susceptibility to interference. The particular challenge is that there is no line of sight between the central control system and the cabin along the approx. 300-metre-long route of the inclined lift. On event days, there are thousands of interference transmitters in the immediate vicinity, for example from video transmission, mobile radio and radiotelephony.

Solution

The DATAEAGLE 3000 used transmits the PROFIBUS signals to the cabin by radio. This operates like an elevator in self-propelled mode with fully automatic doors at the top and bottom stations. The entire control system was manufactured and designed in accordance with EN81.1 safety regulations for the construction and installation of elevators for the transportation of persons or persons and loads.

Products used

  • PROFIBUS radio data transmission system
  • Radio module DATAEAGLE 3712

Outcome

The elevator was approved for operation by the TÜV shortly before the Four Hills Tournament without any rework. “After the first 2 years, we found that the availability of the elevator was almost 100%” writes STB Steuerungstechnik Beck in 2014.

Our customer STB Steuerungstechnik Beck GmbH writes:

"The inclined elevator was put into operation in 2005. The control system was completely refurbished in Nov. 2011. A radio system from another supplier was installed in the old system. The system was very susceptible to faults and was always very critical in winter. The system was completed 2 days before the Four Hills Tournament in December 2011, the operation ran perfectly straight away, without any radio failure. With the Dataeagle, the Beckhoff safety control system runs very stably. During the tour there were a lot of wireless cameras etc. on the system, there was no interference from any side."
