Extremely cold, extremely exposed, extremely charged

In extreme environments, stable communication is essential for the safe operation of technical systems. ABS, a subsidiary of Doppelmayr, implemented a DATAEAGLE Profibus radio link for an inclined lift in Georgia in a challenging project. Temperatures as low as -40°C and repeated lightning strikes placed high demands on the installation. Despite these challenges, reliable and secure data transmission was guaranteed.

Application

The inclined lift connects a mountain and a valley station in an area of Georgia that is difficult to access. The distance is 500 meters, with no direct line of sight between the stations. The communication solution is based on the D 3000 with Profisafe via SCHILDKNECHT HA WLAN in the 2.4 GHz band to enable safe and efficient control of the inclined lift.

Challenges

The extreme climatic conditions with temperatures as low as -40°C placed high demands on the components used. In addition, the exposed antenna position required a comprehensive lightning protection system, as lightning struck three times during the installation phase. The lack of line of sight between the mountain and valley stations made radio transmission even more difficult and necessitated a sophisticated antenna strategy.

Solution

To ensure a stable and secure connection, an antenna system with four D Master antennas was implemented. Two antennas are located on the roof of the mountain station, while two others are installed inside the mountain station. By using an antenna splitter, which distributes the signal energy to two antennas, it was possible to compensate for the lack of line of sight. DATAEAGLE 3000 with Profisafe via Schildknecht HA WLAN in the 2.4 GHz band was used. The lightning protection system was specifically optimized to protect the sensitive components from further strikes.

Products used

  • HA WLAN in the 2,4GHz Band
  • DATAEAGLE 3000 radio module with Profisafe

Outcome

Despite the extreme conditions, a highly reliable Profibus radio connection was created to ensure the safe operation of the inclined lift. The innovative antenna installation enables stable communication between the top and bottom stations. The robust lightning protection measure prevented damage caused by repeated lightning strikes. With this solution, ABS has impressively demonstrated that state-of-the-art technology works reliably even under extreme conditions.
